The Historic City of Rome

Rome rises from the Lazio region in the central west of Italy. Cradled between the Apennine Mountains and the Tyrrhenian Sea, “The city of Seven Hills“ is home to almost 3 million people. Rome is without doubt one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Every year millions of tourists come from around the world to admire the treasures and masterpieces of Roman Art and Architecture. The eternal city is packed with beautiful monuments, grand buildings and magnificent attractions.  The city of Rome is a blend of History, Art and Architecture.

A trip to this eternal city may be confusing for first time visitors. Hence,  it’s important to get an idea of the city first. Rome Airport is 19 miles outside the city. You can take a train to the city, but it might not take you near your Hotel. Better option may be to take a cab, especially when you have lots of luggage. To feel the essence of Rome, book a Hotel near the attractions. It may be expensive, but it’s worth it. Sights in Rome may be the Trevi Fountains, Roman Pantheon, Piazza Navona,  St. Peter’s Basilica and the Colosseum. The Colosseum may take you a full day to explore.

The Vatican is one of the greatest attractions in Rome. Vatican is the smallest country on Earth, with a population of 800 people. It is also one of the biggest tourist destinations of the world.  It could well take you a full day to explore all treasures this complex holds. Avoid the long lines by pre booking your tickets. It’s a marvellous complex of Ancient Art and Architecture.

Going Hungry is one thing no traveller should worry about while in Rome. The city is literally overrun with good places to eat. Most of the restaurants are outdoor and offer Italian dishes. The café culture is also prevalent here. Rome may not have many multi cuisine restaurants, but it has enough to serve people from all around the world.

The best time to visit Rome is in the months of April, May, September and October. These are months when the attractions are not very crowded and there are a limited number of tourists. Avoid August as all of Italy heads for vacation in this month. Summer months are not only crowded, but also has a hot and uncomfortable climate. People usually club Rome with their Europe tour, but if you want to closely explore this historic city, have at least 4 days.

Rome is very well connected by Eurail. If you are visiting from other European countries, Eurail is the best option. Else, there are many carriers flying into Rome. Alitalia is the national airline. Other major carriers which may be considered are American Airlines, British Airways, Etihad, Emirates and Singapore Airlines.
